Trends are not roadmaps for something you have to do. They are simply descriptions of behavior that is accelerating.

In this episode, I sat down with bestselling author and expert on disruptive marketing trends, Rohit Bhargava.

We discussed the anatomy of trends, the future of work for IT, and next-generation marketing in this riveting conversation.

What is your company’s vision? It’s a simple question, yet still, one that many entrepreneurs are unable to effectively answer this question in a cohesive manner when asked. Although the answer to this question will be unique to every leader, the premise behind the answer is that it must be written in ink.

Oleg was given the nickname of “the da Vinci of Visionary Leadership" due to his ability to create and execute a compelling vision for businesses while also identifying a manager's strategic needs in corporate culture and leadership.

Oleg’s wisdom transcends industries and experience levels, capturing my attention and leaving me on the edge of my seat waiting for the next great sound bite.

I’ve spoken with Oleg once before and have been clamoring to get him back on my podcast after hearing many of his incredible stories of perseverance and determination which continue to reverberate through my life to this day.

Apr 29, 2020

Today my guest is Oleg Konovalov. Oleg received his doctoral degree from the Durham University Business School and is a member of the 2019 Class of Thinkers50 Radar. He has been recognized as #1 Global Thought Leader on Culture by Thinkers360 and is #1 Global Leading Coach (Marshall Goldsmith Thinkers50).

Oleg is an influential and thought provoking business thinker. His long international consulting experience has given him a superior understanding of how business works across different cultures and has made him adept at dealing with challenges at all levels. His research identifies entrepreneurs’ and managers’ strategic needs in the areas of corporate culture, leadership, and he uses corporate diagnostics, in order to enable them to drive their companies to success.

He is the author of four best-selling business books, and he continues his research and writing journey identifying entrepreneurs and managers’ strategic needs and helping them drive their companies to success and become true champions of healthy business culture.

I love talking with leaders like Oleg Konovalov on my podcast. The wisdom they have to share from broad business and life experiences is invaluable. In this episode, Oleg tells some terrific stories about how he teaches leaders and organizations to seek out real problems and find effective solutions.

We discuss the leadership role and why it’s important for leaders to create a space for themselves that’s different - apart from the problem. Oleg believes that taking this step back and looking at your problem from a different (new) perspective is critical to identify the - often underlying problem, keeping you and your organization from dragging old mistakes into the future.

Oleg also points out a new way of looking at ‘end of career’ thinking. If you were 50 or 56 years old – 20 years ago, you would be considered at the end of your career. Oleg looks at it quite the opposite. At the employee level, he doesn’t think people truly understand how productive and how much these 50-something employees still have to offer.

Listen as we discuss his perspective and the question, “If everything changes and everyone is learning in the present, every day, how will we all impact the future and build this new reality from scratch?”

You will love every second of this interview with Oleg as he reveals his strong insight about organizational leadership and culture. After you listen to this podcast, you can continue to expand your ‘knowledge bank’ and read more from Oleg in his most recent book, LEADEROLOGY.

Here are some of things that you will learn in this podcast episode:

  • What does the expression,"A dog isn't born to climb on trees" mean?
  • Why corporate problems are usually the result of the leader or leaders' action or inaction.
  • What are the 14 Pathologies in an organization?
  • Why are only 3% of leaders good at decision making?
  • Why do complex visions fail?
  • How do you drill down to identify the real problem?
  • The value of creating real solutions that add value vs. simply creating content
  • Why is it essential for today's leader to have a knowledge bank?
  • The necessity of humility in leadership
  • Why being curious is such an amazing skill to cultivate
  • The shift in leadership towards Systemic Approaches; such as Leadership + sharing vs. Boss dominant cultures of non-sharing
  • Why only 0.1% of leaders have a vision
  • The difference between Having a Dream vs. Ambition vs. Having a Vision
  • What will you do with the success you achieve?

In this, the newest Episode of my RedZone Podcast, my guest is Patrick Sweeney. Since this interview, Patrick has become a best selling author as his new book, Fear Is Fuel: The Surprising Power to Help You Find Purpose, Passion, and Performance, has hit the Wall Street Journal's Best Seller List at #5! A fantastic achievement.

Patrick has been dubbed the “Fear Guru” for his work with more than 500 global CEOs, actors, professional athletes, Navy SEALs and corporations. He inspires 25,000 people each year through keynote speeches teaching tools to live the biggest, most fulfilling life possible. He also lectures at leading universities from Harvard Business School to the University of Virginia.

Before earning a top tier MBA, he placed second in the Olympic Trials in rowing and is the only person to ever summit Mt. Elbrus, Mt. Kilimanjaro, and Everest Base Camp by bicycle and in 2018 won the Race Across America in a four-person team. He is also the first person to attempt cycling the seven summits. In Feb 2015 he became the first person to officially bike to Everest Base Camp in Nepal, the summit of Kilimanjaro and the summit of Elbrus.

He was the founder and CEO of four technology companies, holds seven patents, produced award-winning adventure documentary films and is an angel investor in over 30 start-ups. He was the Chairman of Young Presidents Organization (YPO) Sports & Entertainment Network, and has appeared on CNBC, CNN, Good Morning America, Fox News and the Today Show.

Few people know what it's like to be in a prison of fear their entire life. For over 30 years fear drove Patrick's choices and actions, and he missed out on countless amazing opportunities that life presented him.

After contracting a rare form of leukemia, Patrick found courage as a super-power. Curiosity led him to discover the neuroscience behind his life changing transformation so, he interviewed three dozen of the World's top neuroscientists. Those sessions changed his thinking and instilled a new mission in Patrick to share what he learned and help others transform their life from fear-based to confident and courageous.

There are two ways that you make decisions in life either out of fear or out of opportunity. The first leads to regret, shame and failure; the last leads to growth, happiness, success and learning. In this conversation, Patrick and I discuss how 70% to 80% of our decisions are made subconsciously out of fear, based on what neuroscientists call prior beliefs.

These preconceived beliefs are what create subconscious fear, and unless we can ask ourselves powerful questions and replace judgement with curiosity, these fears will play out throughout our lives.

Patrick shares some fantastic stories and we talk about how changing this type of thinking and decision making is particularly relevant for CEOs, like myself, and for CIOs and IT Leaders like those in my CIO Innovation Forum groups.

Listen to this podcast episode to learn more about understanding and finding your hidden fears. Then grab a copy of Patrick Sweeney's new book, Fear Is Fuel: The Surprising Power to Help You Find Purpose, Passion, and Performance. He wants to teach you courage, confidence how to achieve peak performance. His mission is to help millions around the world use fear as fuel.

Here are some of things that you will learn in this podcast episode.

  • How can you enhance your internal database'?
  • What does Patrick mean when he talks about your tribe' and the 3 layers that are critical?
  • How to find your hidden fears?
  • What is the terror triangle?
  • How can you double your mind's capacity for processing?
  • What is the difference between a physical and emotional journey?
  • How can you develop a blueprint for bravery and courage?
  • How to stop that amygdala from hijacking your decisions?
  • Why is it important to scare yourself every day?
  • How four by four' breathing can clear your mind?

My guest today is Deborah Rowland, a leading thinker, speaker, writer, coach and practitioner in the leadership of large complex change. Deborah has devoted her 3-decade career to the study, practice, and dissemination of effective ways to lead true transformation that takes individuals, teams, organizations and indeed whole societal systems to a genuinely new place.

Working alongside CEOs and their Executive Teams to help them navigate large scale transformation efforts, and importantly, attend to their own leadership practice as part of that, Deborah has personally led change in major global organizations including Shell, Gucci Group, BBC Worldwide and PepsiCo.

In 2017, Deborah was named on Thinkers50 Radar as one of the generation of management thinkers changing the world of business. Her consulting firm, Still Moving, pioneered original research in the field, the latest efforts of which were accepted as a paper at the 2016 Academy of Management and at the 2019 European Academy of Management. I found her in a wonderful book called, The Chief Strategy Officer Playbook: How to Transform Strategies Into Great Results.

Deborah brings a unique combination of experience, insight and research to the leadership of change. Although there has been much research on the benefits of mindfulness to the individual, Deborah’s research is original, focusing on the business impact. Her latest book, Still Moving: How to Lead Mindful Change, offers practical examples of how to bring a higher level of awareness into your company.

In addition to consulting, speaking and writing, Deborah has contributed to faculty teaching at Business Schools such as Henley Management College, Tuck, and Bath Management School.

Don’t be confused about mindfulness - you don’t have to be a meditation student or yoga instructor to understand it. Mindfulness is like a muscle that you build. It’s a stake you put in the ground that you say, my reaction to events is more important than the event itself. Mindfulness requires skill and is worth knowing about and building it into your repertoire.

For now, if you want to explore Mindfulness in a new way, and if you want to learn from a high-level Master, this conversation is the perfect place to start.

As modern leaders in a fast paced and complex world you will learn:

  • A mindful leader understands that stillness brings correct action and momentum
  • A mindful leader observes and in this process brings change
  • A mindful leader has difficult conversations and can make hard decisions
  • A mindful leader is aware and awake and is integrated
  • A mindful leader is better able to work with complexity because they will understand the whole
  • A mindful leader will be able to work with discomfort better
  • A mindful leader is more impactful to the business and those around them
  • A mindful leader is able to navigate organizational boundaries better
  • A mindful leader has discernment of mindless busy action
  • A mindful leader understands the imperative of wisdom

My guest today is Kelley Steven-Waiss. This is a woman who's really at the pinnacle of her career. What I love is that, as a leader, you will be able to see how Kelley is dealing with the human resource issues that we're facing in the marketplace. That both of the skilled resource challenges, being able to find talent and train talent, and how you create engagement and a culture that is both powerful and profitable, and  embraces the new workforce all the way from the oldest generation – to the youngest in the workforce.

Kelley does this right now at HERE technologies, a multiple thousand-user organization. She's done that with Extreme Networks, Integrated Device Technology, and PMC-Sierra. She has been responsible for global human capital and human resource strategies for all of those companies. Kelley is also on the board of FormFactor, which is a publicly traded company in California, as well as being the chair of the Advisory Board of Silicon Valley Education Foundation.

Kelley is incredibly accomplished. Something I know you're going to enjoy hearing about is her innovation within Hitch, an endeavor within the HERE technologies umbrella. Kelley founded and solved a problem using AI and machine learning to find and source talent within her organization. Now, it's actually generating revenue and is being sold to other companies as well. In my CIO Innovation Forum group, we often talk about the innovation mindset and how we're doing this within our organizations. Kelley is a perfect example of this. How she brought in an idea to solve a problem within her own organization - and now it's available for sale and purchase to others.

Kelley has co-authored a new book with Edie Goldberg called, The Inside Gig: How Sharing Untapped Talent Across Boundaries Unleashes Organizational Capacity. The book is scheduled for release in April 2020, but is available for pre-order now.

Kelley has this abundance mindset. One of the things she’s doing through this book is coaching leaders to look at the availability of talent from within their organizations and reverse a scarcity mindset by looking at this abundance of talent that they already have.

We've taken on these exponential technologies that give us the ability to have 10x growth, but we have to lead a different way. We have to lead from an abundance mindset, one in which we approach workers from a different perspective - not a command and control, but from understanding worker's whole selves because that creates a unlock and it creates a shift in a powerful change in the leadership paradigm.

So, we cover a lot of ground in this conversation and you're going to find valuable nuggets and snippets throughout. I'm really looking forward to getting feedback from all of you.

I want to welcome you to my conversation with Kelley Steven-Waiss.

What I think you will like about my conversation with Kelley is that she will give you a window into where you have to adjust your thinking related to:

  • Multiple generations of workers co-existing
  • Leadership and serving your workers needs
  • How to encourage people to bring their Whole Selves to work and the power this enables within your workforce versus (just get the work done) She discusses what has shifted and the powerful unlock into a new leadership paradigm
  • For CIOs, especially with the talent squeeze globally, pay attention to elements of our conversation
  • The powerful story of how she founded Hitch, a talent Opportunity & Mobility platform that creates an internal marketplace for employees to find and discover opportunities so that the business can source talent from within.
  • From a top CHRO's perspective, the most critical skills that you must insure that your kids have to prepare them for the modern economy.
  • How you can go sideways yet still go forward

About Kelley Steven-Waiss

Kelley Steven-Waiss is Chief Human Resources Officer at HERE Technologies, overseeing the company’s human resource management and talent strategy. Kelley has more than 25 years of executive management experience in human resources, change management, and corporate communications.

She started an incubator while at HERE to develop a talent mobility solution called Hitch, a cloud-based SaaS software, which uses machine learning and AI to match project-based opportunities to internal employee profiles based on visualization of employees’ skills.

Prior to joining HERE, Kelley was Executive Vice President of Worldwide Human Resources for Extreme Networks, responsible for the company’s global human capital strategies. Before that she held numerous executive management, including at Integrated Device Technology (IDT) and PMC-Sierra, as well as consulting positions in large global consulting, public software and retail companies.

Kelley earned her MA in Human Resources and Organizational Development from the University of San Francisco, and a BA in Journalism from the University of Arizona. She sits on the board of Form Factor, a Silicon Valley public semiconductor company, and is Chairman of the Advisory Board for Silicon Valley Education Foundation (SVEF). She is married and the mother of four children.

Today my guest is Charlene Li. Charlene is a graduate of Harvard and of Harvard Business School, she's been named one of the most creative people in business by Fast Company, and she's an expert in digital transformation and disruptive growth strategies. Charlene has just released a new book called, The Disruption Mindset: Why Some Organizations Transform Why Others Fail. Charlene is a founder of and a Senior Fellow at Altimeter, which is a Profit company. She is the author of five previous books including a New York Times bestseller, Open Leadership; and the co-author of the critically acclaimed book Groundswell.

I love how she explains that we've been approaching disruption backwards. In my conversation with her, we talk about how companies make disruption their goal, but they believe that if they develop the right innovation, they will disrupt the markets forever and drive the kind of growth worthy of what their Board of Directors wants. But, as Charlene explains to me that it's not how disruption works.

Disruption doesn't create growth. Instead she talks about how growth creates disruption. I love how she hits it across the head when she says, growth is hard. She's not mincing words here. Disruptive growth is exponentially harder. It requires companies to make tough decisions in the face of daunting uncertainties and answer questions like, ‘should we bet our company's future on the next generation customers or today's reliable ones? Should we abandon our current business model for an entirely new one?

Making these bold changes demands leadership and often massive cultural transformation. We talk about leadership, and that in this type of disruptive companies, strategy trumps everything and how we need to meet the future needs of our customers. That leadership requires a movement to drive and sustain. It requires consistency. You can't whiffle-waffle as a leader. She talks about the consistency of the best transformation leaders and culture, of course, culture.

We talk about culture, something she calls flux culture. Also, we discuss her concept of a dashboard. Many of you are digital leaders, but what do your dashboards look like? Charlene gets into specifics on what a true disruptive organization should have in there... the entire company is looking at it as it relates to their dashboard. You're going to love the envisioning exercise we talk about with envisioning your future customer.

I love to speak with book authors like Charlene because we're taking 30 years’ worth of meeting some of the best, most transformative conversations and experiences, and distilling it into a book and a conversation.

Charlene and I discuss ten powerful stories, concepts, ideas and strategies from this amazing book. Here are some of things that you will learn in this podcast episode.

  • Specific leadership strategies that Jeff Bezos deploys at Amazon which allows him to build and scale an enormous company.
  • The importance of a flux culture and its positive impact in a disruptive company.
  • An amazing example of envisioning future customers.
  • How one must lead moving forward in times of exponential change.
  • The power of Dashboards in disruptive and innovative companies.
  • The super power of disruption leaders to instill hope and confidence.
  • Disruption doesn’t create growth. Growth creates disruption.
  • Innovative companies vs. disruptive companies
  • What is the role of the CIO – moving forward?
  • Breakthrough growth shifts the balance of power and of established relationships.

About Charlene Li

For the past two decades, Charlene Li has been helping people see the future. She’s the New York Times bestselling author of six books, including her newest release, The Disruption Mindset: Why Some Businesses Transform While Others Fail, and Open Leadership as well as co-author of the critically-acclaimed book, Groundswell.

Charlene is an entrepreneur who founded and ran Altimeter Group, a disruptive industry analyst firm that was acquired by Prophet in 2015. She continues working at Prophet as a Senior Fellow. She was also a vice president and principal analyst at Forrester Research, worked in online newspaper publishing, and was a consultant with Monitor Group.

With over 20 years of experience in tech and business, she has been a respected advisor to Fortune 500 companies on digital transformation and leadership. Charlene also serves on the regional board for YPO, a global network of CEOs.

Charlene is a sought after public speaker and has appeared at events ranging from TED and the World Business Forum to SxSW. She has appeared on 60 Minutes and PBS NewsHour, and is frequently quoted by The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, USA Today, and The Associated Press.

If you enjoy listening to my podcast, please take a minute to leave a review here!

I found my guest today, Dr. Joyce Benenson, through a book I read called Top Dog, recommended to me by one of my recent guests, Navy Seal, Captain Tom Chaby.

Joyce is a professor of Psychology at Emmanuel College in Boston and an Associate Member of the Human Evolutionary Biology department at Harvard University. She is an author of a fascinating book called Warriors and Worriers: The Survival of the Sexes. The book explores the evolutionary differences between men and women and how they survive through competitiveness. Drawing on an interesting array of studies and stories that explore the ways boys and men deter their enemies, while girls and women find assistants to aid them in coping with vulnerable children and elders, Benenson turns upside down the familiar wisdom that women are more sociable than men and that men are more competitive than women.

As much as I love to interview guests on leadership and high performance topics on my podcast, in this interview, Joyce and I discuss what IT business leaders could learn from her studies on gender differences to get the most out of their high performance teams.

Key Points of Interest in This Episode:

I think self-awareness is the key to being a high-performance leader. You will need to draw your own conclusions from my discussion with Joyce Benenson. In an age of political correctness and non-brave communications, I love reading and listening to experts who explore topics worth considering in our political environment.

As you explore your own process of developing as a leader in business and in your life, learn unique biological attributes of man and women that will help you be a better more “self-aware” leader.

With this, I’d like to welcome you to my interview with Joyce Benenson.

My guest today, Jeff Tippett is a Raleigh, North Carolina-based public speaker, and owner of the public affairs firm, Targeted Persuasion.

Known by audiences and fans as Mr. Persuasion, Jeff Tippett is a subject matter expert in persuasive communications. Jeff has impacted thousands of lives through over 500 presentations, including keynotes and seminars. He helps people increase their effectiveness, gives them powerful tools for attaining goals and dreams, and helps them positively impact their organization – all as they learn techniques for communicating persuasively with others.

The heart and soul of Jeff’s presentations is the emotional story he tells of adopting his youngest daughter from Haiti while the country’s government was collapsing. Through this near death experience of navigating civil unrest and institutional bureaucracy in a third world nation, Jeff learned valuable lessons on how to persuade others without ever manipulating. Jeff unpacks these secrets of the superpower of persuasion in every presentation.

What You Will Learn About in this Interview:

  • Focusing on Your Brand: We personify our brand. What is your brand saying about you? I think all of us have a responsibility to sell what we believe, sell ourselves, or sell our message. Learn how to communicate the right message – one that will get noticed.
  • Communications in the Workplace: Millennials Are Changing the Game: Unlike previous generations, millennials’ expectations of open communications, deeper connections and authenticity are presenting a communication challenge within the workplace.
  • The Benefits of Telling the Full Story – in Bite-sized Pieces: Shorter attention spans require short messages – not an explosion of information. You want to capture people’s attention with one word that makes them wonder what the second word is – and makes them ask you for the next level.
  • Understanding How People Respond and Positioning Your Message: You know that people primarily respond out of emotion and not logic. Find what is emotional in the story you’re trying to tell around the information. Lead with that, work in the logic and you’ll have your best chance of persuading and moving your audience with you.
  • The Process of Debriefing and Drilling Down to the Simple Message:
    • Let the information all spill out – get it out of your head.
    • Ask, “What problem am I solving with this that I’m trying to convey?”
    • Strike out everything that isn’t crucial – keep only the main words that convey your message.

With this, I want to welcome you to my interview with Jeff Tippett.

Major Take-Aways From This Episode:

  • Jeff Tippett’s Big, Bold Statement: “We all live or die based upon our ability to persuade.” What’s the difference between persuasive communications and manipulating people? How does understanding this difference help you rise to the top?
  • Jeff’s Audience Take-Aways: As a keynote speaker, presenter and author, Jeff believes that conveying his energy, making an emotional connection, and creating a common ground with his audience is key to their taking away actionable content.
  • Verbal Imagery: Clear the playing field using the word “imagine”. By freeing any barriers of reality, it sets your audience up to listen and allows them to picture the world, the situation, or the environment the way that you want to describe it to them.
  • Get Out of Your Own Head: It’s a challenge. What’s the message that you’re trying to convey to the person you’re talking to? What’s in it for them? Do you care? Your willingness to listen and to make a connection with them – on their terms, will define your success.
  • Communicate with Humor: Humor is one of the best approaches we can use for people to drop down the barriers and walls. We can use things like humor, compassion, empathy, and storytelling as well and authenticity to help us make that connection with our audience.
    • This is about being kind to other people and finding ways that we can connect with other people, to whatever degree, and willingness they are willing to connect.

Many of the topics discussed in this interview are also included in Jeff’s second book, slated for an early 2019 release, titled: Unleashing Your Superpower: Why Persuasive Communication Is The Only Force You Will Ever Need.

My guest this week is Chris Pirie, who until recently, was General Manager in Microsoft’s SMGSR organization. Chris led the training and readiness for all Microsoft’s sales, marketing, and technical field employees worldwide.

Chris joined Microsoft in September 2004 as Senior Director of Learning Product Development, and subsequently he held global sales and marketing responsibility for Microsoft Learning, the organization’s customer training business. Chris has launched The Learning Futures Group which helps organizations rethink their Learning and Development strategy in the face of historic disruption and change in the workplace.

What You Will Learn from this Interview:

  • The most agile companies win: How does learning support this strategy?
  • Bold experiments in learning: How do organizations, companies and networks create the right environment to foster individual agility and fitness to become a better learner?
  • Companies relaxing with learning: It’s not micromanaging the process, but creating an environment that encourages a learning culture and putting some scaffolding around it.
  • Old frameworks and top-down modules of learning are dying: Today the expertise isn’t always at the top of the network or the organization. Things are moving too quickly for old structured processes.
  • The power of the metaphor with learning: Giving companies the ability to take on new ideas and develop new intellectual property, like patents, by their ability to ingest new ideas from outside their four walls.
  • Advanced research in learning using neuroscience: Offering better ways to understand how to move information into long-term memory. Discovering which social and physical conditions can accelerate or throttle the learning process.

With this, I want to welcome you to my interview with Chris Pirie.

Major Take-Aways from this Episode are:

  • There are about 170 documented cognitive biases, which are a fundamental part of how the brain operates. Research coded into workable models will help learning experience designers to leverage brain chemistry and biases.
  • Collapse expertise’s from Edge to Core of the business.
  • How to use hackathons to build learning cultures. Organizations are creating open opportunities for learning where people teach each other and learn together – using all the resources of the company to do things that they’re passionate about.
  • Scaffolding learning strategies. Organizations not just voicing the importance of a learning culture, but showing their commitment by creating the “scaffolding” to support building one.
  • People organizing their own learning vs. being told what, when, and how to learn. New models are proving that it’s much more useful to give people the skills to organize their own world rather than structuring everything for them.
  • Leaders viewing learning as a source of growth and a source of competitive advantage. Organizations make space for people to bring their natural ability to learn, to be curious and teach each other.

Are you and your team ready to make Leapfrog Steps or are you simply making Incremental Progress?

How do you get hard things done?

We are so often conditioned to look at the negative end of accomplishment. As human beings we tend to look at all the reasons something can’t be done versus listing all the reasons how it can be done.

My discussion with Don Wiegner in many ways you have heard the message before, but this time around you are hearing it from someone who has just spent two years doing what others thought was impossible. He discusses how to accomplish insurmountable goals and do it in a way that brings people together under a common purpose. Have you had a defining moment in your career where your back was against the wall and you had to get the job done?
